Lootera, Ranjhanaa, Oz, The Vow

Highlight of the past week has been that I’m in a romantic movies mode. It peaked with Lootera then came a deep LOW with Raanjhana, also saw Oz in the middle but then special effects are just for the ” wow ” factor and then came a nice little pondering with the Vow. Below are the romantic notions the movies stirred up.

Lootera – The story is based on “The Last Leaf”, which I think I read somewhere in my teens so as the movie unfolded I pretty much knew what was happening next. But the treatment, the acting, the romance, the ideas surrounding the notion of pure love left me breathless with excitement. To love someone as much as you hate them and wanting to work towards redemption is a beautiful adaption to this old story. The desire to see the one you love experience the beauty of life to the fullest is not seen often in today’s time. The silences and the soft tones of the dialogues and then the frustration felt by the ones wanting to rid themselves of the feelings of angst against someone, is very identifiable. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but since I could relate to so much of the journey, I just fell in love with the movie. It’s truly poetry in motion.

Raanjhanaa – I was intrigued. The dialogues and acting is truly the star of the movie. They keep you hooked even when your brain is screaming to bail out. The characters and story are the villain of the movie for me. Doing stupid things in love is a common enough occurrence. Not realizing when you are being so blatantly manipulated at every turn, though dumb is understandable as well. Yes, love is blind we get it. But a movie is supposed to do more than just show one side of love. I take offense to the only statement it making is than being in love HAS to mean that you are meant to be treated like dirt and ” kuch bhi chalta hai ” so to speak. Though, when you relate very strongly to a movie in any way goes to show that the makers have done their job well. Thus I grudgingly admit it’s worth a watch. You may be left frustrated but you will have witnessed good movie making.

OZ – Disney has become predictable in the sense that they NEVER disappoint. The story is unique, the characters believable, even in fantasy. Special effects leave you open mouthed and the end with a smile on your face.

The Vow – Now here was a movie I needed to see to get the after taste of Ranjhanaa out of my mouth. A story about a married couple going through turmoil as the wife loses 5 years of memories. Beautifully made though I would have preferred more romance than shown. But then when a movie is based on real life, romance may be few and far between as art mimics life. Left me wondering how many years would I have to lose before I looked at my future self and said ” NO way am I going to turn into that person!! ” I think personally for me that number is 15. What about you ? How many years back would it be for you? Would your past self unquestionably accept all the decisions you have made ?
