How to Keep Your Backlist aka Older Books Working for You

When a new book release is around the corner, authors often find themselves consumed by launch parties, newsletters, pre-orders, and social media hype. But here’s the secret that seasoned authors know: while your new release is your shiny new toy, your backlist is the reliable friend that keeps showing up for you. In fact, many authors earn the bulk of their royalties from books that are years old.

Authors often get discouraged by the short-term view but building a long-term plan for your upcoming books is critical for growth and passive income.

As I’m getting ready to release my new middle grade book and fantasy series and I am so excited about what that means for my older books and all the possibilities.

So, how do you make sure your backlist isn’t sitting in the shadows while your latest book hogs the spotlight? Let’s talk about why your older titles matter and how to give them the attention they deserve—especially during the excitement of a new release.

Why Your Backlist Matters

When a reader picks up your latest release and loves it, what’s the first thing they do? They go looking for more. If your backlist is easy to find, refreshed, and actively promoted, your new book doesn’t just sell on its own—it acts as a gateway to every book you’ve ever published.

Ignoring your backlist during launch season is like inviting guests to a dinner party and forgetting to set the table—you’re missing out on a chance to wow them with the full spread.

Five Ways to Promote Your Backlist During a New Release

1. Bundle or Discount Older Titles

A new release is the perfect excuse to shine a light on your older work. Offer bundle deals, discounted eBooks, or “buy one, get one” promotions. Readers who are excited about your newest book will jump at the chance to grab your earlier titles at a bargain. Promotions create urgency, and urgency sells.

2. Refresh with New Covers or Formats

If your backlist covers look a little outdated compared to your shiny new release, consider a refresh. A new cover design, audiobook version, or anniversary edition can breathe new life into a book. Pairing an older title with a modern design can even make it feel like a brand-new release to readers who missed it the first time.

3. Cross-Promote in Your New Book

Never miss the chance to use your new release as a marketing tool for your backlist. Add “Also by [Your Name]” pages at the end, include sample chapters, or highlight related titles. If a reader has just finished your book and loved it, that moment of emotional connection is the best time to nudge them toward your other work.

4. Leverage Social Media & Seasonal Relevance

Your backlist can be evergreen, but it can also be timely. Maybe one of your older books ties into an upcoming holiday, awareness month, or trending topic. Use your social media to connect the dots for readers. For example: “If you enjoyed my new book about fresh starts, don’t miss my earlier novel about second chances—it’s all about the same theme!”

5. Engage Your Newsletter & Reader Groups

Your most loyal readers—the ones who open every email—are often the ones most likely to buy from your backlist. Share fun extras like behind-the-scenes stories, early drafts, or how the idea for a new book connects to an old one. Remind readers that every story is part of your larger journey, and they’ll want to come along for the ride.

When you’re pouring your heart into a launch campaign, don’t forget to sprinkle in some love for your backlist. Highlight it in your posts, mention it in interviews, and make it visible wherever your new book is being promoted.

Passive income from your older releases won’t happen unless you give your past book babies some extra loving during new book launch season.

A new release is exciting, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of ignoring your older work. By bundling, refreshing, cross-promoting, tying into social conversations, and engaging your newsletter readers, you ensure that your backlist keeps earning alongside your latest release.
